The Murrieta City Council on Aug. 19 will consider a staff proposal to amend an agreement regarding cost of expansion of the Murrieta Senior Center.

The original agreement in August of 2012 with WLC Architects authorized $37,500 for expansion of the facility to allow for the creation of a dedicated fitness room. Last January, city staff processed a change order for $11,588 for additional costs of the project, increasing the size of the fitness room and providing duct work.

That brought the total cost to $49,088. This change did not have to go before the city council because the cost remained under the city manager's signing authority.

Recently, the City of Murrieta requested community development grant funding to reconstruct the center's entry doors, which are difficult for patrons to open and don't seal properly. It is proposed that the project be combined with the fitness room project and be handled by WLC Architects for an additional $2,464.

This brings the total expense to $51,552, which exceeds the city manager’s signing authority. Thus the proposal must go before the city council, which meets at 6 p.m. on Aug. 19.

The fitness room will include treadmills and eliptical machines and will cover 1,300 square feet.
