A couple faces multiple criminal charges in connection with a July 31 traffic stop conducted by police officers in Murrieta.

Jonathan Matheny, 24, of Murrieta and Ashley Gibson, 24, of Bakersfield have been charged with possession of stolen property, child endangerment and being under the influence of a controlled substance, police said Aug. 14.

On July 31 at 2 a.m., Murrieta Police officers conducted a traffic stop near the 215 Freeway and Clinton Keith Road. Officers identified the driver of the vehicle as Matheny and the passenger as Gibson. Matheny and Gibson had a 16-month-old baby with them at the time of the stop.

During the stop, officers noted both Matheny and Gibson were under the influence of a controlled substance. Both were arrested at the scene. During a search of their vehicle following the arrest, officers located a large amount of stolen mail as well as burglary tools. Both were booked at the Southwest Detention Center for the listed charges. The child was turned over to Child Protective Services.

Patrol officers continued their investigation that morning and ultimately located several mailboxes that had been forced open near Murrieta Hot Springs Road and Whitewood Road in Murrieta. Several Murrieta victims were identified and contacted that morning.

The following week, Murrieta Police detectives followed up on the case and identified additional victims in the cities of Temecula and Escondido. All of the mail tied to victims in both Temecula and Murrieta has since been returned to those owners by detectives. The Escondido cases will be investigated in San Diego County.
