Four businesses in Murrieta were cited for selling tobacco to minors, the Murrieta Police Department announced today.

On Aug. 21, Special Enforcement Team Detectives teamed up with agents with the Riverside County Department of Environmental Health and conducted an operation targeting store clerks who sell tobacco products illegally to persons under age 18. A 15-year-old decoy was sent into 15 businesses in an attempt to purchase tobacco products.

Store clerks sold tobacco products to the underage decoy at four locations:

- Best Tobacconist
- Murrieta Smoke Shop
- Royal Tobacco
- Smoke and Gifts

The clerks were cited by Department of Environmental Health agents and the businesses face tobacco permit suspensions and fines from the county agency as a result of the illegal sales.

A similar decoy operation was conducted with the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control on Aug. 12, when a 19-year-old decoy was sent into 18 businesses. A 7-Eleven clerk was arrested for selling liquor to a minor. The clerk was given a notice to appear and released at the scene. The business also faces additional fines and future inspections from ABC.

If you have information related to these establishments or any other possible illegal sales to minor locations, please contact the Murrieta Police Department Special Enforcement Team at 951-461-6363.
