Jimmy William Kean, 81, passed away on Aug. 10, 2014, at his home in Murrieta, surrounded by his family.

He was born in Sacramento on May 13, 1933 to Pearl (Scholefield) and Edward Kean. In 1951, Jim worked as a Switch Tender for Santa Fe Railroad. Then in 1953 he was drafted into the Army, serving his country in the Heavy Mortar Company 23rd Infantry Regiment for two years during the Korean War, following with six years in the Army Reserves.

When he returned from Korea, Jim held many different jobs, including Furniture Upholstery, Elsinore School District Bus Driver and Mechanic, and Maintenance Mechanic for Murrieta Stud Thoroughbred Ranch. But his career led him to follow his heart when he was hired by the Murrieta Fire Department as Captain in charge of Maintenance.

He wore Badge No. 3, serving from the beginning of the department for 10 of the best years of his life. He had also been a volunteer for many years prior. He was a mentor to many of Murrieta’s finest firemen today, including his son, Battalion Chief Steve Kean.

Jim approached every day with integrity, determination, kindness, and a sense of humor that was legend.

Jim is survived by his wife of 58 years, Mary (Dunham) Kean; daughters Terri (Jeff) Whitaker, Karyn Kean (Keith Waller); son Steve (Sharon) Kean; grandson Michael Murillo; granddaughters Amy (Troy) Aldulaimi, Michelle Murillo, Melissa Shelton, Nicole (Jimbo) Bradbury and Karissa Kean. Also 11 great grandchildren; his sister-in-law Elisabeth DeRemer and brothers-in-law Robert Dunham and William Bleak; many nieces and nephews; as well as a whole community of friends. Jimmy was preceded in death by brothers Jack Kean and John Kean and sisters Kathleen Battista, Reah Dominguez and Agnes Reed.

Graveside services will be held Aug. 29, 2014 at 10 a.m. at Laurel Cemetery, 42800 Ivy St., Murrieta, with a luncheon to follow at Monteleone Meadows, 35245 Briggs Road, Murrieta.
