Coming off a big loss last week, Murrieta Mesa High School's Rams stepped up their defense Friday night in a nonleague victory over Tahquitz High of Hemet, 31-6.

The defense was huge with three turnovers in the game. McKinley Ross rushed for a touchdown and intercepted a pass on defense to improve the Rams to 2-1 on the year.

Coach Justin Schaeffer said after the game that they made a few changes on defense after last week's game and it worked out well for his team.

"We played our best defensive game of the year and I'm proud of what my team accomplished," he said. "They played well with confidence."

Ross left the game in the third quarter with leg cramps and his replacement, Irvin Alfaro, rushed for 69 yards and two touchdowns late in the game.

Quarterback Peyton Uhl also threw a touchdown pass to Jacob Ray early in the third quarter to give the Rams a 17-0 lead. Tahquitz got on the board in the fourth quarter but missed the extra point. The Rams still led 24-6 at that point.

The Rams face Palm Springs next week in a nonleague game that is also Murrieta Mesa's homecoming.
