Two Murrieta men were arrested on charges including possession of illegal drugs and counterfeit currency, Murrieta police announced today.

At 5:19 p.m. on Sept. 10, officers from the Murrieta Police Department Probation / Parole
Compliance Team conducted a probationary search at a residence in the area of 40000 Via Espana. As the officers approached the residence, they attempted to contact two males, identified as Kevin Zipfel, 27, and Richard Shapiro, 43, both of whom are on probation.

Zipfel and Shapiro attempted to flee into the residence to avoid the officers. Zipfel was immediately detained and Shapiro ran into the residence. Shapiro was subsequently located hiding under patio furniture on a second story balcony and found to be in possession of narcotic paraphernalia, police said.

A search of Zipfel's vehicle revealed he was in possession of counterfeit U.S. currency and items commonly used to produce counterfeit currency. Officers discovered Zipfel was producing counterfeit $100 bills from $1 bills. A search of his residence revealed he was also in possession of a usable amount of heroin.

Zipfel and Shapiro were both placed under arrest and booked into the Southwest Detention Center.
