Each week of the school year, Murrieta 24/7 honors top student-athletes at Vista Murrieta High School. The coach of each varsity sport is allowed to select one athlete based on the previous week's performances or on potential shown by the athlete. Here are this week's Vista Murrieta High School Athletes of the Week:

Matt Shirey was honored for an outstanding game for the boys water polo team. He scored nine goals in the Broncos' win over Troy High School.

Kathleen Navarro shot a personal best 40 at Redhawk Golf Club on Sept. 18 in the biggest match of the year against league rival Great Oak. Her 4-over-par effort was capped by a 25-foot birdie putt on the last hole that propelled Vista Murrieta to a year's best 194-209 victory.

Football player Dwayne Johnson blocked a punt and a PAT kick and had an overall solid defensive game for the Broncos in their 42-18 win over Lakewood Sept. 19.

Trevor Knaus of the boys cross country team posted a three-mile time of 15:02 last week. Ashley Cahalan of the girls time covered the three-mile distance in 17:18 to earn Athlete of the Week honors.

Amanda Pedersen-Henry had a standout week for the girls volleyball team, which opened the season by winning three of its first four matches.

These athletes will be eligible for selection as one of Vista Murrieta High School's Athletes of the Month, which will be announced the first week of October.
