Senior water polo player Ryan Sargis and sophomore golfer Serena Chon were honored as Murrieta Valley High School's first Murrieta 24/7 Athletes of the Month.

Sargis and Chon received a certificate and gift card from Murrieta 24/7, which sponsors the award. Local student-athletes are honored each week. Then one boy and one girl are honored each month for their accomplishments.

Sargis is one of the top players on the Nighthawks' water polo team, which is ranked second in CIF Division 3. Murrieta Valley defeated Murrieta Mesa 20-5 Tuesday, opening defense of its Southwestern League championship.

Last year, Sargis and his teammates advanced to the CIF semifinals in Division 2. Earlier this season, they won the prestigious Coronado Tournament.

"We're really close as a team," Sargis said. "These guys are like my brothers. We go through a lot. Conditioning and just the physical aspect, being able to keep up for the whole game, are the keys.

"The mental aspect is a big part of it, too. There's a lot of guys trying to intimidate the other team, get in their heads."

Chon hopes to one day attend UCLA on a scholarship, but for now she is making a name for herself on the Valley golf team and in local tournaments. Her recent highlight was a two-day SCPGA event, in which she shot 80 and 77.

"The hardest thing is the mental aspect," said Chon, who started playing golf at age 5 when her whole family took up the sport. "I have to make sure I'm not overthinking all my shots."
