Texie Petchel and Kyle Williams are the Vista Murrieta Athletes of the Month.

A versatile football player and talented golfer were the first honorees from Vista Murrieta High School to receive the Murrieta 24/7 Athlete of the Month awards.

Kyle Williams and Texie Petchel were honored for their accomplishments in September. They received a certificate and gift card from Murrieta 24/7, sponsor of the program.

Williams moved from wide receiver to quarterback in the first game of the season due to an injury to Westin Long. He has played much of the first half of the season at that position, helping lead the Broncos to a 3-2 record.

Williams has rushed for 477 yards, passed for 310 yards and provided stability while Long plays himself back into shape. He has also caught 4 passes for 37 yards.

"Right now, we're going week to week," Williams said about his position status. "We're trying to get everyone healthy. The whole team's like a family, so you do what you do to help your family."

Williams, a junior, hopes to play college football and major in engineering. Meanwhile, he is committed to helping the Broncos bid for the Southwestern League title.

"I feel a lot more comfortable at quarterback now," he said. "I practice a lot at both positions. As long as I know my assignment, it's easy to switch back and forth."

Petchel, a senior, is headed to UNLV on a full-ride golf scholarship next year. According to her coach, Ryan Heise, Petchel is a major reason the team started the season 9-1, 5-0 in league play.

"She is a top contender for the League MVP, which will be determined in three weeks at the league prelims and finals," Heise said.

Petchel has been a medalist in every match, averaging a score of 77 for 18 holes.

"It's been fun," she said. "I've had the most fun this year. My team is amazing.

"I like golf because you can think a lot and interact with people. With other sports, you don't get as much talking time. I get to meet a lot of cool people."

Petchel hopes to return to Vista after college and work there as a teacher.
