An adult bicyclist was listed in critical but stable condition in a local hospital Tuesday after he was struck by a vehicle on a Murrieta street.

The bicyclist, a 42-year-old male, was not identified. According to Murrieta police, he was struck by the driver of a Ford F-150 truck in the 25000 block of Jefferson Avenue near Guava Street at about 3:38 p.m.

Officers responded to find the bicyclist down and the driver of the Ford F-150 with front end damage still on the scene. The bicyclist was northbound on Jefferson in the bicycle land and was struck behind by the truck, police said.

The bicyclist suffered major head trauma and was transported to Inland Valley Hospital.

The Ford F-150 driver, identified as 39-year-old Billy Raymond Bilke Jr. of Moreno Valley, was evaluated and determined to be under the influence of alcohol. Bilke also admitted at the scene to being distracted on a cell phone and eating at the time of the collision.

Bilke, who has no criminal history, was arrested for Felony Driving Under The Influence Causing Great Bodily Injury. He was booked at Southwest Detention Center and is being held on $90,000 bail.

Jefferson Avenue was extremely busy when the collision occurred and very few witnesses came forward to assist officers by giving an account of how the collision occurred. If any motorist witnessed the collision or can help investigators with details surrounding the collision, please call Sergeant Jay Froboese at the Murrieta Police Department's Traffic Division at 951-461-6302.
