Two men who were arrested for a series of ATM robberies through Riverside County, plead guilty in court.

David Joseph Silva Jr., 25, of Fontana and James William Costilow, 38, of Riverside, were arrested on Sep. 22 after an unsuccessful ATM robbery at a Chase Bank in the 40600 block of California Oaks Road in Murrieta. They attempted to cut the hinges of the safe doors, but after that failed, they tried to pull the doors off with their truck. That attempt failed when the bumper of the truck ripped off.

The suspects were confronted by Murrieta Police, before fleeing the scene. Within five hours of the attempted robbery, police apprehended both suspects.

During their guilty pleas, Silva (pictured left) and Costilow (pictured right) admitted that they attempted to break into Chase Bank ATMs in three counties, 15 times, in a six-month period. The pair successfully broke into the safes in four ATMs and conspired to steal approximately $462,093 in cash.

In some of their earlier attempts, the pair tried to steal the whole ATM, but moved on to using a "jaws of life" device to gain access inside the ATM safes.

Silva plead guilty to the charge of conspiracy to commit bank larceny, a charge that carries a statutory maximum penalty of five years in a federal prison. His sentencing hearing will be held on Feb. 23.

Costilow plead guilty to the same charge and has a scheduled hearing on Feb. 9.

This case was a product of an investigation by the FBI and the Murrieta Police Department.
