At Tuesday night's Murrieta City Council meeting, council members took a timeout from their discussions to honor a 30-year veteran of the police force.

Detective Vic Carrillo, who served the city of Murrieta for 21 years, announced his retirement, effective on Dec. 30, and received the thanks of those who run the city.

Beginning his career in 1984, Detective Carrillo originally served the Montebello Police Department, in Los Angeles County, as an officer in the gang unit. In July of 1992, Carrillo became one of Murrieta's first police officers.

His accomplishments include being one of the first DARE officers to the students of the Murrieta school system. He was also the first school resource officer for Murrieta PD. Carrillo also has received many department accommodations and accolades for an excellent job performance, during his time of service.

In 2008, Carrillo took on the position of detective, a role he has enjoyed for the last six years.

At the city council meeting, every council member gave praise to Carrillo's hard work and each one of them had a found memory to share with those in attendance. Mayor Harry Ramos shared a story of a tour that Carrillo gave to his family and Mayor Pro Tem Randon Lane shared an experience he had when kids egged his car and Carrillo was the responding officer at the scene.

Not alone in their wishing Carrillo a happy retirement, members of the public spoke out about how much Carrillo meant to them, bringing tears to the eyes of the audience.

For a long career in law enforcement, that spanned 30 years, the city of Murrieta presented the detective, who was at a loss for words, with a gold watch.
