In a game that turned out to be a nail-biter, Murrieta Valley High School pulled out a win in the fourth quarter over Murrieta Mesa in girls basketball, winning by a score of 53-47, to open up Southwestern League play.

#1 Arianna Hernandez drills a 3 to give Valley the lead
Mesa (11-6, 0-1) entered the fourth quarter with a 4 point lead, but they didn't enjoy it for long. Chipping away at the Rams' lead, with 2:41 left in the game, captain Ariana Hernandez (pictured left) drilled a 3-pointer from the corner for her second 3-pointer of the quarter, to put Valley (16-1, 1-0) up 44-42.

The Rams kept the score within 4 points for the last two minutes of the game, but eventually had to foul the Valley players to stop the clock and get a chance at getting the ball back.

Free throw shots made by senior Julia Cardenas and junior Breanna Bilton kept the score in Valley's favor, despite 4 points scored by Mesa's Octavia Williams in the last 28 seconds of the game.

The Rams held a lead at halftime, even with their two leading scorers being held down. Williams entered halftime with 2 points scored and Mikayla Greens (pictured right) was held to 5 points. Williams, Greens, and Jessica Brogden, warmed up in the second half, but their performances were not enough to hold their 6 point lead at the half.

Bilton led the Nighthawks with 11 points in the second half and 17 points overall, to give her team the victory. Teammates Hernandez and Alex Morrison chipped in with 12 points each. The Rams were led by Williams' 16 points and 15 points by Brogden.

Murrieta Mesa will next face Temecula Valley (11-6, 0-1) on Jan. 16, at home. Murrieta Valley will battle Vista Murrieta (11-4, 1-0) at home, also on Jan. 16.
