Murrieta Mesa Athletes of the Month Bryan Phan and Kiersta Tanner are joined by Athletic Director William Bree.

Basketball standouts Bryan Phan and Kiersta Tanner have been selected Murrieta 24/7's Athletes of the Month for January representing Murrieta Mesa High School.

"Bryan has basically led us in every statistical category for the past month," said his coach, Antwan Dela-Paul. Phan has averaged 13 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists a game for the Rams, who close out the season with games at Great Oak tonight and at home against Chaparral on Friday.

Although the Rams won't make the CIF playoffs, Phan established himself as a leader on the court and hopes to continue his career in college.

"Closing out games has been a challenge for us," said the senior guard. "Often we'll start out really well and we blow it at the end -- or the opposite, when we have to play catch-up the whole game. But I'm the team captain and I take pride in keeping my teammates together."

Tanner is a senior shooting guard for the girls basketball team, which is 14-10 overall heading into the last week of play and has an outside chance to make the CIF playoffs.

"We'll find out Sunday if we make the playoffs," Tanner said. "If we win the next two games, we can tie for third."

Tanner, who hopes to continue her basketball career at Southern Virginia University, said a challenging season has helped her develop as a player and as a person.

"I'm proud that I stuck with it through the hard times, struggling to help us get focused and keep our priorities straight," she said.

Tanner is averaging 7.7 points and 4 rebounds per game.
