Dorothy McElhinney Middle School sixth grader Jalin Taylor beat out 28 other students to take first place recently in the 2015 Murrieta Valley Unified School District Spelling Bee.

The two top spellers in grades 4-8 from the district’s 11 elementary schools and four middle schools went head to head for 11 rounds during the three-hour event, held at Thompson Middle School.

Jalin went up against Ethan Swenke, Ruth Dunlop and Kyle Yoon in the last three rounds. Kyle dropped out in Round 9. In round 10, both Ruth and Ethan misspelled their words and Jalin correctly spelled "maestro," giving him the first-place trophy. He finished second last year.

Two more rounds were held to determine that Ruth finished second and Ethan third. Both are students at Thompson Middle School. Murrieta Youth Soccer League gave a $75 Barnes and Noble gift card to Ruth and a $50 gift card to Ethan.

Jalin received the first-place cash prize of $100 from Murrieta Youth Soccer League, as presented by District Superintendent Patrick Kelley (left). Jalin will represent the district at the Riverside County Spelling Bee on March 4 at the Moreno Valley Conference and Recreation Center.
