A 17-year-old student at Murrieta Mesa High School was arrested on suspicion of making a threat against Vista Murrieta High School on Twitter, Murrieta police reported today.

Officers were alerted on the morning of Monday, March 23 to a threat posted by an unknown person stating "I'll shoot up Vista." The post was submitted to the Juvenile Investigations Unit for follow-up. By 2 p.m. Monday, officers identified the source of the threat.

A Murrieta Mesa High School student was identified as the individual responsible for the post and was arrested. According to police, the Twitter account owner has been confirmed to be a Vista Murrieta High School student who gave his password to the Murrieta Mesa High School student. The Murrieta Mesa High School student was arrested for making criminal threats and the case is being filed with the District Attorney.

Despite the fact the threat was not descriptive and had no time frame or specific target, the School Resource Officer team worked diligently Monday morning to locate the author of the message, according to a police news release. In addition, the SRO assigned to Vista Murrieta High School handled security at the school site and school officials were alerted to the threat. During the preliminary stages of the investigation, the district and the police department posted a message to parents on the VMHS website, as well as the all call phone message system detailing the status of the threat.
