The explosion of an aerosol can placed in a refrigerator resulted in an estimated $50,000 damage to an apartment building in Murrieta on Wednesday, fire officials said today in a news release.

The Murrieta Fire Department responded with 16 firefighters to the Silverado Apartments at 25100 Vista Murrieta Road at 4:29 p.m. Crews arrived to find smoke coming from the second story of the apartment building. Immediate evacuations were completed by firefighters of nine units adjacent to the unit where the explosion occurred. Crews entered the apartment and extinguished the fire and found no occupants in the unit.

According to fire investigators, a pressurized aerosol can was placed in the refrigerator to eliminate odor being ignited by electrical components on the inside of the appliance. The explosion destroyed the refrigerator and resulted in a fire to the kitchen area of the apartment.

The fire was held to the unit where the explosion occurred.
