Members of the Murrieta Police and Fire departments and several Riverside County Emergency Response agencies will participate in a mock casualty drill at Shivela Middle School on Monday from 3-7 p.m.

Parents of students at the school and neighbors have been notified that although there will be a large police and fire department presence at the school Monday afternoon, this is only a drill. Administrators, teachers and staff from Shivela Middle School and students from Shivela and Murrieta Mesa High School will participate in the drill, which will simulate an active-shooter incident.

According to Murrieta Valley Unified School District officials, numerous police, fire and ambulance personnel will respond to Shivela Middle School with lights and sirens. The school will be placed on a mock lockdown, in which fire department personnel will practice procedures for extracting "injured victims" from the scene. Ambulance personnel will transport "victims" to local hospitals and a Mercy Air helicopter will land at the park adjacent to the school to airlift victims to a trauma center.

There will be no actual emergency and no students, faculty or staff will be injured or in any danger during the staged drill, officials said.
