Police arrested a Murrieta man in Ontario Sunday night after a freeway chase that began with a carjacking in Temecula and included another carjacking in Menifee.

The incident began about about 7 p.m. when deputies responded to an area of Old Town Front Street near 5th Street in Temecula to the report that a suspect had assaulted a man and stolen his black Dodge Charger. Moments later, Sheriff's deputies received a report of a second carjacking on northbound Interstate 215 near McCall Boulevard in Menifee.

Acording to police, the vehicle taken in Temecula had run into heavy traffic at McCall. The driver jumped out of his Charger, pulled the driver from a pick-up truck, and after assaulting him, fled northbound in the 215.

The vehicle was sighted a short time later on the northbound I-215 near Alessandro Boulevard. The California Highway Patrol joined the chase. The pursuit ended near the Interstate 15/10 interchange in Ontario. The driver abandoned the pick-up, fled on foot but was quickly apprehended by CHP officers and a Sheriff's K-9.

Giorgio Armani Castanon-Baez, 27, of Murrieta was arrested and will be charged with several felonies, including two counts of carjacking and evading arrest, police said. Further investigation revealed he was on parole, was under the influence of a controlled substance, and was in possession of a knife and methamphetamine.
