In a touching tribute to a fallen local hero and an impressive show of patriotism, thousands of people lined both sides of Kalmia Street and Washington Avenue in Murrieta Wednesday night in silent tribute to Marine Sgt. Eric Seaman, who died in military service May 12.

People of all ages from Murrieta and surrounding communities waited for more than two hours for the arrival of the funeral procession, holding American and U.S. Marine flags. As darkness fell and they continued to await the police escorted procession from San Diego International Airport, people held flashlights and candles, waiting for a local hero to return home.

Seaman, who grew up in the area and attended Elsinore High School, was one of six Marines who died when their helicopter carrying supplies to earthquake victims crashed in Nepal. Seaman, who was stationed at Camp Pendleton, is survived by his wife Samantha and two children.

Police and fire personnel were stationed atop each freeway bridge from San Diego to Murrieta as the hearse carrying Seaman and limos with his family passed by, accompanied by dozens of motorcyles carrying members of the American Legion Riders and other veterans. As the procession approached Murrieta, police blocked off the streets and residents moved closer, lining one lane of westbound traffic for the procession on its way to the Murrieta Valley Funeral Home on Washington Avenue.

Seaman's funeral will take place at Lake Elsinore Storm Stadium on Friday.

Visit our site again Thursday morning for additional reporting on the return home of Sgt. Eric Seaman.
