A Sheriff's Department dive team on Monday, Aug. 10 recovered the body of a man missing since Sunday afternoon when his kayak capsized on Lake Skinner.

The body of Benjamin Pedro Lucas, 19, of Guatemala was located on the lake bottom in approximately 20-25 feet of water about 12:30 p.m. Monday, according to a Sheriff's Department news release. His body was recovered and examined at the scene. There are no signs of foul play, authorities said. The victim's next of kin, who was present during the recovery operation, was notified by the deputy coroner at the scene.

According to authorities, witnesses said Lucas was on a kayak approximately 100 yards away from the marina when, for unknown reasons, the kayak capsized. Lucas, who could not swim and was not wearing a life jacket, began to struggle in the water. A marina employee went to the location in a boat but could not locate Lucas, who already was submerged in the murky water.

A dive team, helicopter unit and deputies on the ground searched for Lucas until darkness on Sunday, then resumed the search Monday morning with the use of sonar.
