Members of the Murrieta community got a chance to talk with public safety officers in a relaxed environment and children had a blast checking out the equipment displayed at the city's National Night Out event in Town Square Park on Tuesday, Aug. 4.

Representatives from the Murrieta Police Department, Murrieta Fire Department, California Highway Patrol and other public safety agencies mingled with residents as part of an event that takes place once a year around the country. Target sponsors the event, and local store employees were on hand to serve free hot dogs and drinks to those in attendance.

Guests got to see some of the equipment used by police officers, firefighters and SWAT team members. A K-9 unit was popular with the kids, who also raced to climb aboard a rescue helicopter that landed at the far end of the park. There was a jump house and other activities for the children. Members of the city council took a break from their meeting at City Hall next door to come and join in the event, including mayor pro tem Randon Lane (left).

Murrieta Police Chief Sean Hadden spoke about the value of having such an event for the community.

"It gives the public an opportunity to see some of the functions we have," Hadden said. "You have SWAT, you have the command post, our K-9 unit, traffic units ... it gives that one-on-one interaction, and that's what I've experienced walking through here. The people really enjoy just talking to the officers and learning about what we have.

"Just like it says on our cars, we're 'Partners with our community.' We're a safe community because the community cares about what happens. They call, they get involved."
