The Drama Company at Murrieta Mesa High School will present the musical "Oklahoma!" in seven performances over the next two weeks, with opening night set for Thursday.

The classic musical, which portrays the rivalry between cowboys and farmers in Oklahoma over a century ago, will be performed by two separate casts that alternate performances. Casting and auditions began in December and cast members have been rehearsing after school and on weekends in preparation for the event.

Murrieta Mesa teacher Chris Ryan is the director of the musical. The male lead of Curly will be played by Isaac Cunalata and Cameron James. The female lead of Laurey will be played by Layne LaDou and Arianna Galindo.

"I like Oklahoma because it's a very classic piece," said LaDou, a senior. I like that there's a lot of ensemble numbers in the show. There's a lot of dancing, which is a lot of fun.

"I've been doing theater since I was about 3 years old. I've done a lot of community theater, but this is my first high school musical. I've done a lot of dramatic theater too, but I like musicals the best."

The performance also include student orchestra members and back-stage personnel.

Performances in the Gershwin Performing Arts Center on campus will take place March 3-5 and March 10-12 at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults and $7 for students, military and seniors. A matinee performance will be presented on March 12 at 2 p.m. with senior citizen tickets available for $2.
