Local residents are invited to join in a silent tribute to fallen Marine Louis F. Cardin of Temecula when the procession carrying his body from March Air Force Reserve Base to Hemet passes south along Interstate 215 to Highway 74 Saturday afternoon.

According to information posted on the website temeculaoutreach.org, the procession will travel along that route approximately 1 p.m. The public is encouraged to show their patriotism and respect by waving American flags along the route and at freeway overpasses in safe pedestrian areas.

Family memorials will not be open to the public, but the Cardin family welcomes the community to a public closed casket viewing April 1 from 8 a.m. to noon at Temecula City Hall Town Square, 41000 Main Street. Parking will be available in the garage adjacent to City Hall.

Staff Sergeant Cardin was killed by enemy ISIS rocket fire at a Marine base near Makhmour in northern Iraq on March 19. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit of Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. A 2006 graduate of Chaparral High School, he served 10 years in the Marine Corps, including three previous deployments to Afghanistan and one to Iraq.

Temecula City Council members Jeff Comerchero and Michael McCracken, both veterans, have created a fund through the Veterans of Foreign Wars to build a permanent memorial in Temecula in tribute to fallen heroes. The Cardin family requests that donations be made to that fund in honor of their son and others who have sacrificed their lives.

For information on how to donate funds in support of that program, contact Veterans of Foreign Wars-Temecula at 951-676-1541 or donate directly to the GoFundMe account which has been set up for this purpose.
