Basketball standout Dwayne Johnson and soccer star Josie Guinn of Vista Murrieta High School have been honored as the February Murrieta 24/7 Athletes of the Month, sponsored by Photos DLite photo studio.

Johnson will perhaps be most remembered for his inspiring play in the boys basketball team's 60-52 upset victory over Riverside Poly in the first round of the CIF playoffs on Feb. 17.

Johnson scored 12 points, including a thundering slam dunk off an alley-opp inbounds pass from Michael Carongcong in the third quarter that set the tone for the Broncos' strong finish. Vista Murrieta advanced two more rounds in the playoffs and finished with a 17-12 record.

"My personal highlights this season happen to be my dunk against Mesa, and catching an alley-oop," Johnson said. "My strengths as a player are that I bring energy and athleticism."

Johnson was also a key player for the Broncos' football team, which once again advanced to the CIF championship game. He is headed to San Diego State in the fall on a football scholarship.

"I would describe myself as a leader," he said. "My teammates are like my brothers, and I treat them that way."

Guinn, a junior midfielder, had a hat trick in the girls soccer team's 6-2 victory over University High in the first round of the playoffs Feb. 18. The Broncos advanced one more round in the playoffs and finished with a 19-4-5 record. Guinn led the team in scoring this season with 24 goals, a school record, and was a key factor in the team's league championship.

"My main focus when I step onto the field is to do whatever it takes to get the win," Guinn said. "I've been part of the Vista Murrieta soccer program since I was a freshman and I feel a sense of responsibility to help lead the team.

"As an outside midfielder, we make a lot of runs, so conditioning and speed are really important to that position. Each game I would go out and just try to do my best, and so to come to the end of a successful season and realize I have the record really feels great."

Coach Ryan Heise had high praise for Guinn.

"Josie is a better person than she is a player," he said. "And that’s saying something, because she led our league in goals and points for the year. Josie has been a consistent leader as one of our team captains and is the type of player that can put the team on her back and carry them onto victory."

"My personal highlight of the season was becoming league champs," Guinn said. "It came down to the last game of the league season against Temecula Valley. After losing to them in the first round, it was such a good feeling to come out and win not only that game, but league as well!"

Johnson and Guinn will receive a free portrait from Photos DLite. A portrait will also be given to the school for display.
