Cynthia Calvillo-Murray has been named 2016 Teacher of the Year in the Murrieta Valley Unified School District, superintendent Pat Kelley announced this week.

Calvillo-Murray teaches fourth grade at Cole Canyon Elementary School. Her colleagues there voted her Teacher of the Year in 2015. She has been teaching at the school for 12 years.

"Cynthia is an educator who impacts student learning well beyond her classroom," Kelley said in a news release. "Her passion for powerful learning experiences for all students is unsurpassed."

Calvillo said while she monitors student achievement through computer programs, projects and tests, she knows learning involves much more. She gives students learning opportunities unique to their skill level. She also uses her love for music in her teaching, celebrating the birthdays of musicians by introducing a musician and their style of music, then playing it in class.

"We do not teach cookie-cutter children," she said. "They all receive and experience learning differently."

Calvillo-Murray also is Cole Canyon's representative to the district's Military Support Advisory Committee. The spouse of a former career military man, she established a Wall of Honor for parents who are serving in the military. She recently coordinated a toiletry drive at the school, collecting over 5,000 items for active-duty service members and veterans.
