A 15-year-old girl died and three others suffered major injuries Thursday in a single-vehicle accident on Jefferson Avenue in Murrieta, police said today.

The girl, identified by the County Coroner's Office as Summer Carbone of Rialto, was riding in the back seat of a green Dodge Caravan that left the roadway and struck a telephone pole at approximately 45 mph about 7:45 a.m. just south of Town Square, according to a news release. The driver of the vehicle, identified by police as 36-year-old William Patrick Causer, said he fell asleep at the wheel. The brakes were not applied before the impact, police said.

Causer and his girlfriend, 34-year-old Rebekah Joy Davis, were both wearing their seat belts and their airbags deployed. Both sustained major injuries.

Davis' two children -- Carbone and a 10-year-old girl -- were asleep and unrestrained in the back seat. The 10-year-old is in critical condition in the hospital with major internal injuries.

Causer and Davis remain in the hospital. Upon their release, they will be charged with multiple felonies, according to police. Drug use and driving under the influence of drugs is suspected in the collision, based on the investigators' initial observations of Causer and Davis. All four were homeless and living out of their vehicle.

So far, no witnesses have come forward to speak with investigators. Anyone with information related to this incident is asked to call Investigator Stickleman at 951-461-6306.
