Golf standout Edward Yi and track and field standout Madison Kast have been honored as the Murrieta 24/7 Athletes of the Month from Murrieta Valley High School, sponsored by Photos DLite photo studio.

Yi has picked up the sport quickly, excelling for the Nighthawks golf team in only his third year playing the sport.

"My dad taught me how to play golf and then I got help from my sister, who is a pro golfer and my coach," Yi said. "The hardest part at first was remembering the steps and focusing.

"My best round this year was 72 even at a tournament in Woods Valley, where my high school won. Some other highlights were in the preseason, where I shot 32 -- my best nine holes ever -- and some 35, 34, 36 scores."

Yi's coach, Greg Ireland, has high praise for his star athlete.

"Edward is an outstanding student-athlete," Ireland said. "His efforts in school and on the course represent what is best about being a Nighthawk. His leadership and excellent play helped lead us to the CIF team championships."

Freshman Madison Kast had quite a season for the girls track team. She started the season with a personal best of 10 feet in the pole vault and improved that to 10-8 in the Southwestern League finals. She then advanced to the CIF prelims, where she finished 13th overall with a mark of 10-3.

Early in the season, Kast broke the meet record by six inches at the MLK Frosh/Soph Classic. She also won the frosh/soph division at the Inland Empire Championships with a mark of 10-6.

"I was interested in pole vault because it looked like a challenge and it was a good transition from gymnastics," Kast said. "The first time I tried pole vaulting, it was awkward to run with a huge pole and it was definitely harder than it looked.

"The key to my success is staying motivated, even when I'm frustrated, and push through days when I'm tired. In the vault, there is a lot to think about, but I try to remember to keep it simple. Also, I wouldn't be as far as I am without my coach and support from my parents."

These are the final Athletes of the Month to be honored this school year. Congratulations to all who were honored.
