Former Murrieta Valley High School teacher Shannon Fosgett was sentenced today to two years in state prison after pleading guilty to felony sex charges involving an underage male student.

Fosgett, 45, must register as a sex offender for life as part of the sentence handed down today in Riverside County Superior Court, said John Hall of the District Attorney's office.

Fosgett, who originally entered a not guilty plea, reached a plea agreement in May in which she pleaded guilty to oral copulation, sexual intercourse, intent to commit a sex act and dissuading a witness. Those felony charges resulted from her contact with an underage teenage male. She also pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor involving another male victim.

Fosgett turned herself in to Murrieta Police detectives two days after she resigned from her teaching position the first week of December. According to a Murrieta Police Department news release in December, the student told detectives one of his teachers began showing interest in him more than a year earlier, starting with after hours texting. He said as the relationship grew, the two engaged in oral sex and ultimately sexual intercourse.
