The Riverside County Sheriff's Department has been asked to conduct an independent investigation of an officer-involved shooting in which a suspect was killed in a confrontation with Murrieta Police Department officers, authorities said.

According to a Sheriff's Department news release, the Murrieta Police Department requested the independent investigation as a matter of policy after the incident, which occurred in the early morning hours of Oct. 22. Officers involved in the incident have been placed on administrative leave, per department policy. A Murrieta Police officer was treated and released from a local hospital from injuries sustained in the incident.

At 2 a.m. that day, Murrieta Police Department officers observed a stolen vehicle near Murrieta Hot Springs Road and Interstate 15. When they attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver took off northbound on Interstate 15 at a high rate of speed. The suspect exited the freeway at Bundy Canyon Road and eventually crashed into a fence in the 32500 block of Mesa Drive in Wildomar.

When officers approached, the suspect drove into multiple patrol cars and continued to drive in the officers' direction, according to the news release. At that point, an officer-involved shooting occurred and the suspect was struck. Officers and paramedics attempted life-saving measures, but the suspect died from the injuries.

The identity of the suspect is being withheld pending the investigation.
