Football player Maurice Bell and cross country runner Caitlin Billman are the Murrieta 24/7 Athletes of the Month for October at Murrieta Valley High School.

Bell and Billman were selected from among all the athletes honored throughout the month as Athletes of the Week after selection by their coaches.

Bell caught 58 passes for 901 yards and 7 touchdowns during the regular season, leading the Nighthawks to the Southwestern League title. They beat St. Bonaventure in the first round of the CIF Southern Section playoffs and will play at Norco next Friday.

Along the way, MVHS defeated perennial league power Vista Murrieta in the league opener, handing Vista its first league loss since 2008.

"It feels real good to be on top of the heap and do something we hadn't done in a while," Bell said. "I kind of expected us to be this good. We had to put in the work, but I knew we had the potential."

Bell has committed to the University of Colorado on a scholarship.

"I committed before my senior season to get it out of the way," said Bell, who wants to major in communications. "Colorado is the best fit for me."

Billman, just a sophomore, moved up from the No. 8 runner last year to No. 1 on the girls cross country team this season. Her personal best was a time of 18:24, accomplished at Temecula Valley and in the Inland Empire Championships.

She will run the 1,600 and 3,200 during track season.
