Football player Kai Thompson and volleyball player Savanah Blake Esteban are the Murrieta 24/7 Athletes of the Month for October at Murrieta Mesa.

Thompson and Esteban were selected from among all the athletes honored throughout the month as Athletes of the Week after selection by their coaches.

Thompson, a junior, rushed for 1,176 yards and 13 touchdowns during the regular season, helping lead the Rams to the CIF playoffs for the first time. Under new head coach Darrel Turner, that continued improvement over last year, when the Rams became competitive in league for the first time.

"It's a big milestone," Thompson said. "We've been working hard ever since spring, when coach first came. It shows all the hard work we've done actually paid off.

"I've met some personal goals, but for me, a lot of those goals come with what the team has done, what the offensive linemen have done for me."

Thompson will run track next spring, competing in the 100, 200 and 4x100 relay.

Esteban, a junior setter, led the girls volleyball team to the second round of the playoffs. She said the successful season helped build team confidence that will carry over to next year.

"It was a big improvement, and it was also a big improvement in the mindset of the players," she said. "We've all grown up and we learned we can beat these teams in league. That's something we didn't have in the past.

"We're losing four seniors, but we have a lot or underclassmen coming up."
