Tennis player Emma Vanderhyden and football player Pouono Faaagi are the Murrieta 24/7 Athletes of the Month for October at Vista Murrieta High School.

Vanderhyden and Faaagi were selected from among all the athletes honored throughout the month as Athletes of the Week after selection by their coaches.

Vanderyhyden, a senior, played No. 1 singles for the Broncos and helped lead the tennis team to the CIF Southern Section Division 2 finals, where they lost a close 11-7 decision to Palos Verdes. The furthest Vista had ever made it in the playoffs previously was the quarterfinals.

"The whole team has improved as the season's gone on," Vanderhyden said. "We made a lot of lineup changes as the year went on and finally found a successful one."

Next, year Vanderhyden will play soccer on scholarship at Eastern Washington University.

Faaagi received the honor as a lineman, which is rare recognition for a football player other than a quarterback or running back.

"I think the coaches noticed my hard work in the classroom and on the field," said Faaagi, who is considering continuing his career at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo next year. "I've worked really hard to make my senior year memorable."

Faaagi started on both offense and defense -- a credit to his work ethic and versatility.

"Last year I was mostly a defensive linemen," he said. "This year we had a couple guys go down with injuries and a lot of seniors leave, so they asked me if I wanted to do both. I would do anything for the team."

The Broncos football team beat Bishop Amat in the first round of the Division 1 playoffs and will be at home against Mater Dei next Friday.
