Vista Murrieta High School has had an extraordinary boys basketball season so far, and their game against Ramona High proved they are a legitimate top team as they blew out the Rams, 83-64, in the Paloma Valley Winter Shootout on Wednesday.

It was a never-ending party for the Broncos that was filled with fast breaks, steals, alley-oops and three-point shooting that had the whole crowd excited from start to finish.

Vista point guard Michael Carongcong had 10 points to go with 8 assists and looked like a Steve Nash protégé who seemed to be running the Phoenix Suns’ "seven seconds or less" offense, as the Broncos kept on running and gunning their way to score as many baskets possible.

Brendon Newble led all scores with 16 points, Trevon Ridley had 10 points and Trevor Sergent had 6 points along with 9 rebounds.

Each player on the team was able to score. Balanced scoring has been a key to success for the Broncos in their victories.

From the opening tip-off, the Broncos showed Ramona (3-10) how dangerous their full-court press was, as they stole the ball seven times in the first 5 minutes, leading a majority of them to easy layups.

The second quarter was Vista’s most impressive stretch all game, with their defense holding the Rams to a mere two points all quarter. The Broncos outscored Ramona 25-2 to close out the first half.

Even as they had such a comfortable lead throughout the second half, Vista Murrieta (9-1) kept their game running on cruise control with the continuous ball pressure on defense and excellent cutting and ball movement on offense that kept piling up the scoreboard.

The Rams had a tough time getting anything going. They had difficulties spacing the floor to move the ball effectively and create open jumpers, something Vista kept taking advantage of.

Vista Murrieta plays Elsinore High (3-6) Thursday night as the Paloma Valley Winter Shootout continues.
