Murrieta police arrested a Lake Elsinore man on Jan. 11 after he was found in possession of a cell phone that was reported stolen from a vehicle in the Walmart parking lot located at 41200 Murrieta Hot Springs Road, authorities said.

The Murrieta Police Department responded to the Walmart at 2:39 p.m. regarding a vehicle burglary. The victim who had called told officers her window had been shattered and her cell phone was missing. A suspect was not located at that time and a report was taken.

At approximately 5:05 p.m., authorities received a report from the same victim stating that she was tracking her cell phone using the "Find My IPhone" application. Based on the movement of the phone, she believed that it was inside a vehicle and provided a description of a possible related vehicle to the dispatcher. Officers responded to the area provided and located a vehicle matching the description given by the victim. Officers conducted an investigative traffic stop on the vehicle and contacted the driver, identified as Canyon Lagrone.

When told why he was being stopped, Lagrone stated that he had found a phone matching the description of the phone taken during the vehicle burglary. A records check of Lagrone revealed that he was on Post Release Community Supervision (PRCS) for grand theft and had a lengthy criminal history dating back 25 years with convictions for theft, assault, robbery, weapons and possession of stolen property.

A search of Lagrone's vehicle pursuant to the terms of his PRCS probation revealed a cell phone identical to the cell phone taken at Walmart, burglary tools and gloves. The victim confirmed the cell phone recovered from Lagrone's vehicle was in fact her cell phone. Lagrone was placed under arrest for the possession of stolen property, possession of burglary tools and violation of his PRCS probation. He was booked into the Southwest Detention Center.
