Soccer players Makena Smith and Kyle Stratton have been selected as the Murrieta 24/7 Athletes of the Month from Murrieta Valley High School for the month of January.

Smith is a junior goalkeeper for the girls soccer team, which will be at home against Cajon in a CIF Division 3 wild card playoff game on Tuesday. She is a big reason the Nighthawks are 12-6-3 heading into the postseason.

"Makena is a fantastic teammate, player, and captain," said her coach, Shane Ebert. "She is playing at such a high level, she really brings the entire team up. She makes fantastic saves, directs the team, and is great with her feet. Makena makes these amazingly athletic saves that defy logic and leave the entire stadium breathless. She is a joy to coach and to watch."

Stokes also fulfilled the captain role for the boys soccer team. His consistent play and improvement were key factors for the Nighthawks.

"Kyle does a lot for us," coach Matt Stratton said. "He does an amazing job of always working hard. Kyle has worked hard to improve his game and to help develop the skills of the people around him. He has grown so much as a player and as a person in the last three years. I am so proud of him."
