Each week, Murrieta 24/7 honors top student-athletes at Vista Murrieta High School. The coach of each varsity sport is allowed to select one athlete based on the previous week's performances or on potential shown by the athlete. Here are this week's honorees from Vista Murrieta:

Junior basketball player Nakela Smith played a key role in each of Vista's victories the week of Jan. 23: 72-22 over Murrieta Mesa, 67-36 over Murrieta Valley and 66-43 over Norco. She had 13 points, 6 rebounds and 6 steals in the first game of the week, and followed that with 9 and 10 points, respectively, in the next two games.

"What makes those numbers even more impressive is that she comes off the bench for us as our 'sixth man', ' said coach Kurt Ruth. "Beyond the numbers, the toughness and grit she brings to our team along with her selfless attitude makes us a much better team."

Senior Ravi Alston was recognized for his play for the boys basketball team, which is 19-4 overall and 6-2 in league play.

Madison Bennion scored both goals in the girls soccer team's 2-0 win over Great Oak. She sacrificed her body for the second goal and suffered a broken nose.

Junior midfielder Sammy Margolis of the boys soccer team continued to recover from an early-season injury by scoring an early goal against Great Oak and then getting the equalizer in the 80th minute against Murrieta Valley to help the team earn a draw.
