A Lake Elsinore man was arrested by Murrieta Police officers after a vehicle pursuit that included an officer involved shooting on Thursday, authorities said.

Richard Gene Gates Jr., 41, was booked on charges including assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer; reckless evading of a peace officer; and driving under the influence of drugs. He was taken into custody after a struggle with officers at the end of a car chase through the streets of the city in which shots were fired.

A police officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop of a vehicle in the area of California Oaks Road and Jackson Avenue at 1:36 a.m., according to a news release. Based on the vehicle's erratic movement, the officer believed the driver might be driving under the influence. But when the officer tried to make the traffic stop, the vehicle sped away.

With other officers joining the chase, a vehicle pursuit ensued through city streets to the 24000 block of Whitaker Way. At the dead end of Whitaker Way, the driver maneuvered his vehicle in attempting to escape the area. An officer involved shooting took place, with neither police nor the suspect being hit. The vehicle sped away once again.

Slightly affected by a spike strip, the vehicle continued on Washington Avenue and turned east onto Kalmia Street, where it left the roadway. A patrol vehicle pinned the suspect vehicle in and officers began a struggle in which the suspect received minor injuries before being taken into custody.
