Community members are organizing an event to help raise funds for and awareness of the need for CPR training, and they are doing it in memory of a Murrieta boy who drowned at a local pool last year.

Alex Pierce, 13, was attending a year-end pool party for Dorothy McElhinney Middle School students June 3, 2016 at Vista Murrieta High School when he was found at the bottom of the pool by classmates. Witnesses said he did not receive CPR from any lifeguard or other person on site for several minutes, until paramedics arrived. He was kept on life support for 34 days until he was pronounced brain dead.

This event, to be held at Mulligan Family Fun Center from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 20, will raise funds for local CPR training and to raise awareness of the life-saving potential of this practice.

"It was the morning of Thursday, July 7 that Sabrina and Rodriguez Pierce had to say goodbye to their vibrant, youthful, witty, smart little boy," wrote Jamie Pike, one of the event organizers, in an email. "This event was extremely tragic and deeply felt within our community, and sadly very preventable.

"The outpouring of love and support from our community and from around the world was amazing to watch evolve during this most difficult time. It is now Sabrina's hope to give back to the community and to try to bring awareness of water safety and provide local youth with CPR training and certifications."

The event, called "Save a Life for Alex", will feature members of the Murrieta Fire Department and Murrieta Police Department as speakers on the importance of water safety and CPR. Booths will be set up with certified CPR instructors giving "sidewalk CPR" demonstrations. Admission to CPR certifications will be raffled off during the day for those who pre-purchase tickets to the event.

There will also be water safety activities, live music, a silent auction and other activities.

Pre-sale tickets cost $25 and will include unlimited use of the Mulligan Family Fun Center water slides, go karts, mini golf and other attractions. Tickets may be purchased at Dunkin Donuts in Murrieta, where you will receive a free donut at your next visit. Tickets may also be purchased at buytickets.at/savealifeforalex. Tickets at the door will cost $30.99.
