A Murrieta man with a lengthy criminal history was arrested for grand theft auto and other charges after Murrieta Police officers responded to the call of a suspicious vehicle.

James Grant, 30, also faces charges of possession of a controlled substance, possession of brass knuckles, assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer and other charges. Drugs and ammunition were found during a search of his vehicle.

Officers located the vehicle near Nutmeg Street and Via Olivia in Murrieta at 10:53 a.m. on Nov. 8. A records check revealed that the vehicle was reported stolen from Lake Elsinore Oct. 1. The vehicle was unoccupied, so officers conducted surveillance from nearby. The suspect returned about 45 minutes later and drove away. When officers tried to stop the vehicle, the suspect failed to yield.

After a short pursuit, the vehicle collided with a parked vehicle and the suspect was taken into custody. No one was injured.
