Vista Murrieta High School's sports tradition was evident again Wednesday, when 17 seniors were honored for receiving college athletic scholarships.

The group included four athletes heading to UCLA: baseball standout Jake Moberg, football star Elisha Guidry, softball player Anna Vines and volleyball player Lexi Hadrych. Some of the players honored had signed letters of intent during the fall signing period; the rest signed Wednesday, annually recognized as the national signing day for high school athletes.

Moberg hit .365 with 17 RBIs for the Broncos last season and was 3-3 as a pitcher with a 2.42 ERA. The team finished 22-9 last year. Guidry, a defensive back, was in on 67 total tackles for the football team last fall. He also had three interceptions.

Two other seniors accepted football scholarships. Khalil Shakir, who rushed for 906 yards and 7 touchdowns and caught 17 passes for 264 yards, is headed to Boise State. Linebacker Travis Plantier was in on 49 tackles, including 12 for losses. He will attend Dixie State University in Utah.

Gabbi Stoll is averaging 13.7 points and 8.3 rebounds per game for the girls basketball team, which is 22-2 overall and 9-0 in league play. She has committed to Westmont College.

Vines was one of five softball players accepting scholarships from a team that was 18-7 last year. Teammate Amani Bradley is headed to Cal-Berkeley.

"Each one of these individuals sacrificed not only of their time, but we also know every family has made sacrifices for these young ladies and men here today," Athletic Director Coley Candaele said before a large crowd of students and family members. "It is an incredible day, an exciting day that these athletes have dreamed about for many years.

"This is not the destination. This is the starting point. It's understanding that the best of the best come together in college sports."
